DTCC's Tokenization Service: What Ran on Canton, and What to Watch in October
More than 30 firms processed live trades with tokenized DTC securities in July, on Canton and on DTCC's private network. The commercial launch is due this month.
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), the backbone of US post-trade, said on 15 July 2026 that more than 30 firms had processed live trades using tokenized versions of securities held at its Depository Trust Company (DTC). The trades ran on two networks: DTCC's private Besu network, and Canton, which DTCC describes as a public network. DTCC said they set the stage for its Tokenization Service to launch in October 2026.
What was tested
The workflows covered the core of institutional finance: collateral pledges, securities lending, Treasury repo against payment, equity delivery against payment and against delivery, equity token transfers and central-counterparty margin. Named participants included BlackRock, BNP Paribas Securities, Citadel Securities, Digital Asset, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Nasdaq, NYSE, Societe Generale, Tradeweb and Vanguard.
Canton's readiness page says the first phase covers US Treasuries held at DTC, with other DTC- and Fed-eligible assets to follow, and lists BitGo, Blockdaemon, Dfns, Fireblocks and Kaleido as wallet providers for participants. The service operates under an SEC no-action letter dated 11 December 2025, which runs for three years.
The road here
On 1 July 2026, Tradeweb executed a real-time trade in a tokenized US Treasury that settled on Canton against USDCx: Franklin Templeton sold, Virtu Financial bought, and the security and cash moved together. It was the first such trade on Tradeweb, and an early building block for the DTCC service.
What to watch
As of 10 October 2026, DTCC had not announced that the Tokenization Service is live. Reports in August and early October still described the launch as upcoming, without a date. The questions for the Canton market:
- Does it launch in October, as DTCC said in July?
- How much activity runs on Canton rather than on DTCC's private network?
- Does demand follow? In July, CoinDesk quoted Canton Strategic Holdings' chief executive saying the trades proved the technology, not yet the demand.
