Tradeweb Settles a Tokenized US Treasury Trade on Canton Against USDCx
Franklin Templeton sold, Virtu Financial bought, and the security and the cash moved together. Tradeweb calls it the first real-time on-chain Treasury trade on its platform.
Tradeweb, the electronic trading operator for rates, credit, equities and money markets, announced on 1 July 2026 that it had completed a real-time trade in a tokenized US Treasury. The trade was executed on Tradeweb and settled through the Canton Network against USDCx, the USDC-backed dollar token available on Canton.
How the trade worked
- Seller and buyer. Franklin Templeton transferred a tokenized US Treasury security to Virtu Financial in exchange for USDCx.
- Execution. Tradeweb provided the execution platform and price discovery.
- Settlement. Canton synchronised the settlement of the two legs, so the security and the cash moved at the same time.
- Participants. Blockdaemon, Digital Asset, Franklin Templeton, Societe Generale, Tradeweb and Virtu Financial.
Tradeweb describes it as the first real-time on-chain US Treasury transaction executed on its platform. Founded in 1996 and listed on Nasdaq, Tradeweb says it serves more than 3,000 clients in more than 85 countries and has averaged more than $2.8 trillion in notional value traded per day over its past four fiscal quarters. The release does not give the size of the trade or the specific Treasury security.
Elisabeth Kirby, Tradeweb's head of market structure, said participants could move "both the security and cash in real time". Virtu said it is extending its market making to tokenized Treasuries, and Franklin Templeton described such trades as building blocks toward round-the-clock liquidity.
The DTCC link
The release ties the trade to the expected launch of DTCC's Tokenization Service later in 2026, and to the prospect of high-quality liquid assets such as Treasuries settling outside traditional market hours. Two weeks later, on 15 July, DTCC said more than 30 firms had processed live trades with tokenized DTC securities on Canton and on its private network, with Tradeweb among them.
Why it matters
The trade connects a large electronic bond trading venue directly to on-chain settlement on Canton, with a stablecoin as the cash leg. Tradeweb is not new to the network: it has been a Super Validator since CIP-0018, approved on 6 June 2024 at a weight of 10. The open questions are how often such trades happen and in what size, since none was disclosed.
USDCx is minted on Canton when USDC is deposited into Circle's xReserve on Ethereum.
