Derivnex and Canton announced on 13 October 2026 the completion of what they describe as the first OTC swap transaction on Canton. The trade is a total return swap in which DRW acted as counterparty and Marex as the swap provider. It also marks the launch of Derivnex's platform for bringing institutional derivatives lifecycle management on-chain.
The swap references S&P Dow Jones Indices' iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, a US dollar corporate bond benchmark, which Kaiko tokenized on Canton. In a separate release the same day, S&P Dow Jones Indices, Kaiko and Derivnex said the transaction is the first OTC derivative to reference a fully tokenized index on distributed ledger infrastructure.
How the trade was structured
According to the announcements, the trade was represented on Canton as a smart contract containing the transaction terms and designed to remain with the trade throughout its lifecycle. The companies say this gives DRW and Marex a shared, synchronized record for managing valuations and other lifecycle events, instead of each side reconciling its own records across multiple systems.
Derivnex incorporates the Common Domain Model (CDM), a standardized digital representation of derivatives transactions and lifecycle events. Scott O'Malia, CEO of ISDA, said in the release that the use of CDM in platforms such as Derivnex shows how industry standards can support automation and interoperability in derivatives markets.
Don Wilson, founder and CEO of DRW, said: "Uncleared OTC derivatives are a large and growing market with cumbersome back office workflows." He added that the two firms are able to work from the same record on Derivnex.
The participants did not publish the notional value, maturity, payment schedule or margin and collateral terms of the swap, as Genfinity noted in its coverage.
The tokenized benchmark
Kaiko tokenized the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index on Canton and distributed the signed S&P DJI official index values that Derivnex uses to value the position over its life. S&P DJI provides the underlying benchmark data.
According to the S&P DJI release, the index token combines the benchmark data with access permissions and usage rules. It is designed to let authorized participants use the index data in digital workflows while preserving S&P DJI's licensing and intellectual property controls. The index has been licensed for use by DRW and Marex Solutions.
Cameron Drinkwater, Chief Product Operating Officer at S&P DJI, said the arrangement extends the firm's credit franchise into on-chain finance.
Why Canton, and what comes next
The release says Canton provides the shared infrastructure for Derivnex, allowing bilateral counterparties to coordinate transaction workflows while keeping the confidentiality those markets require.
