Goldman Sachs Proposed as a Canton Super Validator With a Weight of Up to 10
A governance CIP posted on 11 September would give Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC a milestone-based Super Validator seat, with rewards held in escrow and its commitments kept confidential. A month later it has not been approved.
Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC has been proposed as a Super Validator (SV) on the Canton Network. A Canton Improvement Proposal titled "Goldman Sachs Super Validator" was posted to the cip-discuss mailing list on 11 September 2026. Its listed author is Abeetha Pitigala. It proposes a maximum SV weight of 10, the same ceiling given to LSEG and Marex in September.
What the proposal says
The draft follows the escrow model used in recent SV approvals:
- Milestone-based weight. Goldman Sachs could earn weight of up to 10 through initiatives to support the Canton ecosystem.
- Confidential commitments. The deliverables were agreed privately with the Canton Foundation and are reviewed by the Tokenomics and Accountability Committees. They may be disclosed later if the Foundation and Goldman Sachs agree.
- Escrowed rewards. The node would not mint rewards round by round. Rewards would accrue in the Unclaimed Rewards Pool until each milestone is verified, and unearned weight would be removed if a deadline is missed.
- A third-party operator. A designated vendor would run the node on Goldman Sachs's behalf and bear its infrastructure and operating costs.
The draft gives as its motivation Goldman Sachs's footprint in global capital markets and says its addition may encourage traditional financial institutions to adopt Canton-native products.
Where it stands
As of 11 October, the Foundation's cip-announce list shows no approval. The most recent SV approval there is CIP-0126 for Marex, which passed on 25 September. The draft has not received a CIP number.
Why it matters
Goldman Sachs would be one of the largest banks to take a seat in Canton's governance. An SV seat would give the bank a direct role in running the Global Synchronizer and voting on network rules. The seat would also add one more weight-10 claim on SV rewards, paid out only as confidential milestones are confirmed. The proposal still needs a vote of the SV operators.
